Travel purposes recorded in this source

The listed purposes do not establish permission to work or undertake other activities.

  • Tourism
  • Business
  • Transit

Prepare and verify

  1. Check whether your passport, journey and transit arrangements fall within the official authorisation scheme.
  2. Apply through the official channel when required and confirm the decision, passport link and validity before travelling.

Your next checks

  1. Write down the passport you will use and its type, your country of residence and your planned activities. Residence and interface language do not replace passport nationality.
  2. List arrival and departure dates, transit stops and entry points. Check each leg separately, including whether you pass immigration during transit.
  3. Open the official instructions for that profile. Record the required documents, submission window, fees and processing guidance; mark anything the source does not confirm as unresolved.
  4. If a condition is unclear, contact the competent authority with your passport country, residence, purpose and dates. Recheck before departure and after a passport or itinerary change.
What else should I know?

An authorisation does not guarantee boarding or entry. A new passport or changed circumstances may require a new application; check the scheme's rules.

Automatic translation. The official authority's source takes precedence.

Who can apply

Check nationality and purpose using the GOV.UK service. Exemptions exist in particular for British or Irish passports and people authorized to live, work or study in the United Kingdom.

Prepare and verify

  1. Check on GOV.UK whether an ETA or a visa is necessary.
  2. Follow the official application link for each traveler concerned, including children.
  • Nationality guarantees neither an ETA nor entry. Business travel must remain within permitted visitor activities; an ETA does not allow ordinary employment.
  • British or Irish citizens, including dual nationals: no ETA. For a UK visa, permission to stay in the UK or Crown Dependencies, BNO passports or British overseas territories citizen passports: check the exemptions.
  • A resident of Ireland normally subject to an ETA arriving from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man: exemption under conditions and proof of residence from age 16. This exception does not exempt visa-required nationalities.
  • Transit without crossing the border: confirm the exemption with the airline; transit through border control: ETA depending on profile. France–UK school trips, pending EU Settlement Scheme applications and people exempt from immigration control have separate rules.
  • Taiwan: identity card number required on the passport, so excluded from automatic matching. Nicaragua and Saint Lucia were removed on March 5, 2026; Nauru, Botswana, Trinidad and Tobago and Colombia are no longer on the list.
